FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: What is a psychoeducational evaluation?
A psychoeducational evaluation is a comprehensive assessment that helps us understand how your child learns. It examines areas such as cognitive abilities, academic skills, and learning strengths and challenges to provide meaningful recommendations for home and school.
Q: How do I know if my child needs an evaluation?
An evaluation may be helpful if your child is struggling academically despite effort, having difficulty with reading, writing, or math, experiencing attention or executive functioning challenges, showing uneven learning strengths and weaknesses, being considered for special education or a 504 Plan, gifted and in need of enrichment or advanced placement, becoming frustrated, anxious, or avoiding school because learning feels difficult.
Q: Do you accept insurance?
At this time we do not accept insurance for educational evaluations. We do offer payment plans.
Q: How long does testing take?
The length of testing depends on your child. A full, comprehensive assessment generally takes between 4 - 6 hours of in-person time. Testing may be split up into two or three session based on the child’s age, attention span, and overall comfort level. As a best practice, pre-school and elementary-aged children are always done in at least two sessions.
Q: How long does it take from the time we start onboarding until we have our final report review meeting?
A: Generally, we like to say anywhere from four to six weeks from onboarding to the time that we have our meeting to review the final report. This allows for flexibility for our families and for our Diagnostician when it comes to scheduling.
Q: Can I stay during my child’s assessment?
You absolutely can stay during your child’s assessment, as long as it does not pose a distraction to the child. However, if you have other errands or duties that are calling your name, you are welcome to attend to those as well.
Q: Should I bring snacks/drinks for my child for during the assessment?
We will provide snacks and water if needed for your child during their assessment. However, if your child has a preferred snack/drink please be sure to bring that with you. We ask that sugary drinks and snacks stay at home to preserve the cleanliness of the testing environment for the next child.
Q: What happens during the evaluation?
The process typically includes a parent interview, review of provided educational records, assessment sessions with your child, scoring and interpretation of results, comprehensive written report, and a feedback meeting to discuss findings and recommendations.
Q: What ages do you evaluate?
Rooted provides evaluations for school-age children and adolescents. Please contact us if you're unsure whether your child is an appropriate candidate.
Q: How is Rooted different from a school evaluation?
School evaluations are conducted to determine eligibility for special education services under specific legal criteria. A private evaluation offers a more individualized look at your child's learning profile and provides detailed recommendations that families can use to support learning at home and collaborate with the school.
Q: Will my child be diagnosed?
Evaluations are designed to identify learning strengths and educational needs within my professional scope as an educational diagnostician. If concerns arise that require evaluation by another professional, I will provide appropriate recommendations and referrals.
Q: What if the evaluation doesn't identify a learning disability?
That doesn't mean the evaluation wasn't valuable. Every child has a unique learning profile. Even when a learning disability is not identified, families often gain important insight into their child's strengths, learning style, and effective strategies for success.
Q: Can my child continue receiving support after the evaluation?
Absolutely. Rooted offers tutoring, educational planning, and family consultation to help put recommendations into action and support your child's continued growth.
